Do you want to succeed in internet marketing? Know what your customers are searching for and you will be half way there. Once you know what your customers are looking for, you can tailor your content to make sure search engines like Google will direct these people to your site. This whole process of finding out what customers are looking for is known as Keyword Research.

After research revealed that 93% of online experiences begin with a search engine, internet marketers like myself took keen interest in keyword research. We wanted to find out what relevant keywords we need to rank for in order to make our clients websites found on search engines.

Importance of Keyword Research

Keyword research is important to the customer and the business. When keyword research is done right, the customer will have a better chance of finding the exact product they are looking for and you (the website owner) will get highly targeted traffic to your site. By highly targeted traffic, it means that you will be getting website visits from customers who are ready to buy your product or seek your services. To summarize, if you use the right keywords, you will have better visibility.

So how do you find out what keywords can give you better visibility online? There are a variety of tools used to help you figure out what your customers are searching for.

Some of the Keyword research tools we recommend include:

  • Market Samurai
  • Google instant(start typing on the search box and the list of keyword suggestions that appear can be your keywords)
  • Google Adwords/Google Keyword Tool

1. Using Google Adwords to find out what Customers are Searching for

Google Adwords is a free keyword tool that can help you to get a wealth of information about your target customers. With this keyword tool, you can see what words people are searching for, how many visitors the keyword/phrase attracts and how competitive it is. From Google Adwords, you will come across so many keyword suggestions you probably hadn’t thought of in the past. You can use these suggestions to create content that is optimized for search engines.

2. Ask your Customer and Sales Team

Your customers are likely to give you the most accurate information regarding what they are searching for. You might meet your customers at a trade show or even engage in a discussion on social media. You can also have a feedback form on your site where customers can give their opinions of what kind of information they would like to see more on your site,

Nevertheless, it is important to pay attention to your customers. Take advantage of any opportunity that arises for you to discuss with your customers. Sometimes, the way you describe your business online could be totally confusing. You need to think of words that customers can relate to and understand what type of product/services you are dealing with even without having to explain further.

If your customers are using different words to explain what you offer on the site, may be this is why it’s not ranking. Use words which your customers are familiar with carefully on the site to boost traffic.

3. Using Google Analytics

If you have never used web analytic tools before, there is no reason to panic. The tools used to track a website’s traffic information are so simple to use.  Start with Google Analytics. With this tool, you can get information about where your traffic is coming from and also the type of keywords people are searching for in order to be taken to your site. With this information, you can structure your content to fulfill the needs of web visitors.

4. Analyze your Competition’s Content

The other way to know what your target customers could be searching for is by analyzing the information provided on your competitor’s site. Look for some of the keywords that your competition is using to come up with your list of keywords. Make sure you emphasize what makes you better than your competition. That’s it for now.
